| This replica of the 1760 One guinea coin stamped in embossed relief with the bust of King George III of Great Britain were produced by Macniven and Cameron in the late 1700s and were used as promotional replica coins or medallions for advertising their dip pen nibs.
Many of these coins were used for trading purposes in the American Colonies foremost at trading depots at Hudson Bay when bartering with the Northern Canadian Indians, usually for the procuring of furs at depots run by the Hudson Bay Company King George III ascended the throne of England in 1760 he remained sovereign until his death in 1820.
In 1764 with the kings approval legislation was introduced by the premier parliamentarian Mr Greenville which brought about the independence of the Colonies and eventually the formation of the Federal Governments of the United States. There is a small hole at the top of the coin where a ribbon was once attached. A gross exaggeration by Macniven and Cameron to claim that one dip in the ink would hold enough ink to write 100 words, perhaps 20 words might be more likely. A scarce and historic small item suitable as a museum piece and of special interest to the enthusiastic pen and writing instruments collector. |
